St. Patty’s Cigars 2020

St. Patty’s Cigars 2020

Match up your favorite Irish beer or drink with one of these great cigar recommendations this St. Patty's Day!

One of the most important (and Irish) things to do during St. Patrick’s Day is certainly to enjoy an Irish beer or whiskey. Whether you are at your pub’s outdoor garden, or at your favorite bar terrace, there couldn’t be a better way to enjoy this celebratory weekend than with a pint of Guinness - or any other drink of your preference- paired with your favorite cigar (of course). Here are some of my favorite cigars to smoke on St. Patrick’s Day.

ACID Blondie Candela

The pig-tailed ACID Blondie will definitely catch your eye. The ACID Blondie Candela, from master blender Willy Herrera, is a mysterious blend of aromatic infused tobaccos enclosed in a sweet, mint green Candela wrapper. This style of leaf lends itself to creating notes of tea and sugar. A little green masterpiece!

Alec Bradley Black Market Filthy Hooligan Toro Barber Pole

Arguably the most popular cigar during St. Patrick’s Day, Alec Bradley has annually released their stupendously popular Filthy Hooligan line of cigars since 2013. It features a very cool barber pole wrapper design which intertwines a clover green Candela leaf with a dark Nicaraguan Jalapa leaf. The cigar is a medium-bodied smoke which also includes Honduran and Panamanian fillers to provide a complexity that is very unique. With its grassy sweetness, creamy smoke, and hints of earth, leather, and nuts, it’s about as green as you can get.

Alec Bradley Black Market Filthy Hooligan Shamrock

Joining the original Filthy Hooligan Barber Pole is the limited edition Filthy Hooligan Shamrock. The cigar utilizes not two but three wrappers in the barber pole style. An undisclosed binder and long filler blend is wrapped in Honduran candela, Habano Maduro and Habano Seco from Honduras. Expect a medium body with a creamy, grassy flavor profile. The Filthy Hooligan Shamrock is truly a triple threat and one hell of a beautiful cigar!

Caldwell- The King is Dead

For the top-notch puro, The King is Dead, Robert Caldwell sources the finest, unique and rare grade A tobaccos from the Dominican Republic. A vintage Negrito wrapper encompasses a Corojo binder, and filler tobaccos consisting of Corojo Ligero, Negrito,  and a Dominican grown hybrid- Habano Vuelta Abajo. This amalgam of rare tobaccos results in undertones of deep milk chocolate which are surrounded by full flavors of coffee, cedar, oak and spice with a rich earthy complexity. A truly unique blend!

Herrera Estelí Norteño

Herrera Estelí Norteño is the brainchild of Willy Herrera who was promoted as master blender at Drew Estate in 2014. The excellently constructed Norteño Robusto incorporates a Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper with Honduran binder and a filler blend of well-aged Nicaraguan tobaccos from the Jalapa and Estelí regions. Full-flavored rich tones of cocoa bean, milk chocolate and nougat offer earthy characteristics without becoming too cloying with saccharine sweetness. One of my all time favorites!

My Father La Opulencia

La Opulencia is a box-pressed beauty dressed in a Mexican Rosado Oscuro wrapper, Nicaraguan Criollo and Corojo binder, and spicy Nicaraguan filler. The main My Father band is followed by the secondary band with “La Opulencia” inscribed in a script font, followed by a bright shamrock green ribbon at the foot. La Opulencia is a fuller bodied experience with elegant flavors of coffee, ground cinnamon, cocoa and a touch of mint and leather.  Get your Irish on with this stogie!

Ogre by Asylum 13

The Ogre is the boutique creation of Christian Eiroa, the mastermind behind the Camacho, Wynwood Hills and C.L.E lines. The Ogre is a Nicaraguan Puro rolled barber pole style with dual Nicaraguan Habano and Candela wrapper leaves. The full-bodied Ogre provides deep, rich flavors of espresso and creamy caramel. It is much more alluring then the name implies!

Undercrown Shade

Undercrown Shade is the second in this line by Drew Estate. The cigars are a creation of Dominican Criollo '98 Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo long fillers, a Sumatran binder, and flavorful Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper. With notes of nuts, cedar and honey sweetness from the outer leaf, it matches up so well with a nice Jameson or Bushmills Irish Whiskey. Tasty!

Wynwood Hills Mayhem

Another blend from Christian Eiroa, Wynwood Hills Mayhem is a Honduran Puro made from hand selected finely aged tobaccos and a natural Corojo wrapper. Wynwood Hills Mayhem is well-balanced with creamy complexity and notes of cedar, grass, molasses and citrus. I think we all associate a little mayhem with St. Paddy’s Day!
