Preakness Cigars

To cheer on your favorite thoroughbred during the 2019 Preakness, here are a few of my premium cigar suggestions!

The 2019 Preakness Stakes will take place Saturday, May 18th. The race is run over the 9.5 furlongs (1 3⁄16-mile) of dirt track at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The week-long celebration will determine if there will be a potential Triple Crown winner. Only 13 horses in history have won the coveted Triple Crown.

To cheer on your favorite thoroughbred, here are a few of my premium cigar suggestions:

#1. My Father Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial is a special blend of a dark, oily Maduro broadleaf wrapper combined with My Father’s well-aged Nicaraguan long-leaf filler and binder. The blue-ribbon smoke is medium-to-full-bodied, firm and smooth with aromatic flavors of oak, espresso, and the signature My Father pepper. On Preakness Stakes Day, The Middle Jewel, enjoy a Baltimore inspired Bloody Mary with Clamato and spiced with Old Bay Seasoning to accompany this fine premium cigar.

#2. The hand-rolled Perla del Mar “G” Maduro is a Toro consisting of Nicaraguan binder and long leaf filler from 4 different regions in Nicaragua; Pueblo Nuevo, La Reina, Condega, and Jalapa. This rich beauty is then wrapped in a dark-chocolate hued Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper leaf. The handsome blue and gold band features vintage black and white artwork of a lighthouse and a schooner. Smoking the “Pearl of the Sea” is reminiscent of sailing on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

#3. Partagas Black Label Magnifico begins with a very dark, unique Medio Tiempo Habano-seed Sun Grown wrapper from the Connecticut Valley and Piloto Cubano long ligero tobaccos from Nicaragua. The Cubanesque Toro exhibits rich, dark, earthy tones with notes of chocolate and roasted coffee. The gorgeous black, yellow, and gold packaging could be an ode to Maryland’s State Flower, the Black-eyed Susan. Although the Preakness is sometimes referred to as "the race for the black-eyed Susans", no black-eyed Susan is ever used in the prize garland blanket.

#4. If your horse won the Kentucky Derby you will be hoping for an encore. Encore Majestic by Ernest Perez-Carrillo is the first Nicaraguan Puro from the company. The blend of filler tobaccos from Estelí, Jalapa, and Condega are nestled inside a beautiful Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. The elegant Robusto has nuanced notes of oak, caramel, tea, and candied orange peel. Encore Majestic was named 2018 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado!

Baltimore Style Crab Cakes

This recipe was named Food and Wines top 40 recipes in 2018.

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 large egg, beaten

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon hot sauce

1 pound jumbo lump crab meat, picked over

20 saltine crackers, finely crushed

1/4 cup canola oil

Lemon wedges, for serving

In a small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise with the egg, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce until smooth.

In a medium bowl, lightly toss the crabmeat with the cracker crumbs. Gently fold in the mayonnaise mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Scoop the crab mixture into eight 1/3-cup mounds; lightly pack into 8 patties, about 1 1/2 inches thick. In a large skillet, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the crab cakes and cook over moderately high heat until deeply golden and heated through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer the crab cakes to plates and serve with lemon wedges.
