Dog Walkers

Dog Walkers

Author Gay Talese told Cigar Aficionado in 1992, “Each evening after dinner, accompanied by my two dogs, I stroll onto Park Avenue to walk my cigar.”

On those occasions when time or weather may be an issue, you may prefer a shorter smoking experience. Smaller cigars are called by those in the industry as a “dog walker”.

These cigars smoke in the range of 15-45 minutes. A double bonus of smaller cigars is the price point.

El Cigar Shop carries a wide variety of sizes from premium cigar manufacturers at great prices. Here are some of my recommendations.

Small "Dog Walker" Cigar Recommendations

#1. ACID C-Notes by Drew Estate is a cute, aromatic infused cigarillo. When you only have a 15-minute break, its' affordability and size make it a refreshing medium bodied afternoon smoke.

#2. Before Last Call by AJ Fernandez debuted in 2016, it was actually the personal blend of the master creator, Fernandez himself. Last Call Habano Geniales is a 4.5 x 48 ring cigar covered in an Ecuadoran Habano Rosado wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and fillers that Fernandez grows himself.

#3. Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story is a 4 x 49 Figurado. The flavorful blend of Cameroon wrapper and Dominican tobacco delivers notes of citrus, earth, and spicy cedar. The Hemingway Short Story is one of the smallest cigars Arturo Fuente creates and should be tried by everyone at least once.

#4. Esteban Carreras Chupacabra Hellcat Hellcatito is a Petit Corona with a 4.5 x 44 ring highlighting a dark Mexican San Andres wrapper and the same binder and filler tobaccos found in the original Chupacabra. The Hellcat is beautifully box-pressed and an awesome short smoke.

#5. Flying Pig from Drew Estate's Undercrown line showcases a very dark Maduro wrap from San Andres, Mexico and nestled inside is a blend of tobaccos from Brazil and Nicaragua. Flying Pig (3.95 x 60) is complex and smooth with sweet and spicy undertones.

#6. The hand-rolled Nub Maduro 460 is comprised of a dark brown, oily Brazilian Maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan long filler, making it the boldest full-bodied Nub in the Nub 460 line. The combination creates a creamy and robust cigar that releases an essence of mocha from start to finish. The 4 x 60 cigar delivers a naturally sweet smoke with rich flavors of caramel, dark chocolate, and coffee. Nub 460 Maduro is the perfect cigar for those with time restraints.

#7. Montecristo Memories (4 x 33) are a quick smoke that will still allow you to enjoy the fine craftsmanship and flavor associated with the classic Montecristo line of cigars.  A high-quality Connecticut shade wrapper is encased with meticulously aged Dominican binder and filler tobaccos. Montecristo Memories carries notes of spice, toasted nuts, and a hint of coffee with cream.

#8. Oliva Connecticut Reserve Petit Corona is a blend of Nicaraguan Viso and Seco long fillers and binder finished in an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. The petit corona is mellower than other Oliva cigars but still remains medium-bodied boasting rich flavors of cedar, almond, coffee, and cream.

#9. Padrón Corticos (4.25 x 35) is all sun-grown tobacco that is aged for a minimum of 2½ years with a Natural wrapper. Expect the classic Padron flavors of wood, leather, and bittersweet chocolate, with a spicy cedar finish. The Corticos is an excellent dog walker.

Omce again, a GREAT list of cigars...especially when you are short on time. I am partial to the Nub series and really like the 460 Cameroon (although the Maduro is awesome, too!).
