"A Very Short Story" is a vignette written by Ernest Hemingway in 1924 Paris. It was later rewritten and published in “In Our Time”, his first American short story collection in 1925. The story is based on the real life affair Hemingway had with a nurse he met in Milan during World War I. To make a short story even shorter… a soldier meets a nurse and falls in love with her. He receives a “Dear John” letter stating she fell in love with another officer. The devastated soldier ignores her pleas to take her back and has an affair with a stranger in a taxi, and contracts gonorrhea. The end.
