Wine and Cigar Pairings

Wine and Cigar Pairings

Pairing wine and cigars is a personal experience. Here are some wine and cigar pairings both passionate wine lovers and cigar enthusiasts can enjoy.

As a rule of thumb wine sales associates are taught white wines pair with fish, chicken and other light foods. Red wine should accompany red meat, pasta with red sauce and barbecue. There is some truth in this yet it still is a matter of taste. The same goes for pairing wine with cigars.

The general rule is that a light bodied cigar pairs well with a similar light-bodied white wine and full bodied cigars go well with bold reds. Once again these are good guidelines that one should consider. The only thing that is of utmost importance when pairing foods, wines, and cigars is your enjoyment.

Wine and cigars do not have to be expensive for you to have a wonderful pairing experience. Your local premium wine shop and tobacconist have a diverse and affordable range of products to suited for anyone’s palate and budget. Let your knowledgeable retailers guide you to some of these true value cigars and wines to expand your horizons into these boutique producers.

Here are a few wine and cigar pairings that I highly recommend. I selected cigars in the $6-10 range and the wines under $20. All the selections should be readily available at your local retailers or online cigar shop. Visit El Cigar Shop to find all the best cigars at excellent prices.

Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial by My Father with Cellars Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Lot 75

Medium-to-full-bodied Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial has a delectable dark broadleaf wrapper and aged Nicaraguan filler and binder creating a delicious cigar with flavors of oak, black pepper with a sweet-spicy character. The Pinot Noir has the signature black cherry, spice and oak flavors that fans of the wine will instantly recognize. The pairing is smooth and complex and the wine provides a long dry finish while oak and a hint of earthiness linger on the palate.

ACID Kuba Kuba with Sterling Merlot

ACID Kuba Kuba cigars use a unique approach to cigar construction with a secret blend of botanical herbs and essential oils and deserve a libation that shines as bright as the cigar. In the past, I’ve paired the Kuba Kuba with rum drinks and ginger beer but recently I’ve turned to Sterling Merlot as my go-to pairing. The Merlot is fresh with aromas of raspberry, black cherry, and blackberry with hints of oak. Sterling Merlot more than adequately competes the other half in this fantastic pairing.

Macanudo Portofino Café paired with La Crema Monterey Chardonnay 2016

The Macanudo Portofino Café cigar is light-bodied with creamy notes and a touch of spice. La Crema Monterey Chardonnay is bright with citrus and the right amount of oak. This cigar’s rich, creamy textures partner perfectly with the creamy nature of La Crema Chardonnay. This is a wonderful light pairing on a warm summer day.

NUB 460 Connecticut along with Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio

NUB Connecticut is creamy and mellow and is buttery rich.  Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio has a dazzling blend of white flowers and smooth citrus. The creamy cool citrus notes will cleanse the palate and make each puff of the NUB 460 Connecticut feel like you're enjoying it for the first time.

I hope you enjoy some of these wine and cigar pairings that we have put forth, but remember, the most excitement lies in discovering your own….and sharing them with friends!
