It is easy to find the right libation for your cigar. You should know what your palate likes to pair with your cigar. Some spirits and cigars are better paired together than others. Let's take a look.

Your sense of taste is already used when you choose a wine to pair with your meal or a sauce to compliment your dish. Your taste buds will tell you which wine is best for you and what flavors go well together. You can find the perfect match by developing your palate and trying out different pairings.

Scotch, bourbon and rye are all great pairings for cigars. Due to the dominance of the cigar over the liquor, white spirits such as vodka or gin don't work well together. However, there are exceptions, such as tequila. You can also pair red wine, beer and coffee. It is important not to let the drink overwhelm the cigar.

These are two key points to keep in mind.

  1. Remember to match the cigar's body with the beverage. Both spirits and cigars can be described as medium-bodied, full-bodied, or light-bodied. This refers to the amount of each cigar on the tongue. A light-bodied cigar, for example, will go well with a young wine, mixed drink, or a flavored pale ale. You can choose aged rum or cognac for a medium-bodied cigar. A full-bodied cigar is a great match for peaty single malt Scotch, Bourbon, or Spiced Rum.

  2. You can make the right pairing by understanding the flavors of your cigar and your favorite drink. Cigars can be described as having flavors of wood, spice and coffee, as well as other characteristics like sweetness. El Cigar Shop's Beginner’s Guide to Flavors and Spices Found In Cigars is available. Spirits can also have a tobacco taste, or be spicy, woodsy, or fruity. These qualities can be combined to lead you in the right direction.

El Cigar Shop's Favorite Cigar & Spirits Pairings

My father #3 and California Zinfandel. True red Zinfandels are full of fruit flavors, with subtle hints of spice or cedar. The My Father #3 Nicaraguan blend is full-bodied with strong notes of spice and pepper. This cigar and wine pair extremely well together.

Padron Damaso with Rum - A good rum, such as the spicy Flor de Cana 12, and a woody, spicy, medium-bodied Padron Damaso make an excellent pairing.

Perla del Mar and beer. The cigar pairs well with mild to medium-bodied Mexican beers like Corona or Dos Equis.

Java is an infused cigar that has flavors of mocha, coffee and a hint vanilla. These cigars are perfect for pairing with rich, flavored coffee (black or flavored).

These tips are my hope. Happy pairing!
