To look at a box of Ashton cigars, or to look at their band, you would not expect complexity. Their logo is a plain one, simply their name and the phrase ‘Imported; Made By Hand’. But, as is so common in the cigar world, a simple logo and an understated band can be the herald of a wonderful cigar that showcases quality and consistency.
Ashton Classic cigars are manufactured by Arturo Fuente, which is one of, if not the best known-name in the cigar world. Though they may make the cigars, that does not mean that the brand was born from the mind of Carlos Fuente Sr.; rather, it came as a sort of collaboration between two groups.
On the one hand was the renowned Carlos Fuente Sr.; a man whose entire life was lived surrounded by the cigar business. He had inherited control of Arturo Fuente, the cigar company that his father started and named after himself, and he brought great prestige and respect to the name. On the other hand was Robert Levin, a man with years of experience running a smoke shop. Carlos knew how to make a quality cigar and to make it consistently, and Robert know what his customers wanted, and they came together to create Ashton.
The Ashton Classic Sovereign is a medium-mild cigar that is generally harder to find, and one of the most popular sizes of the Ashton Classic line. It is a torpedo cigar, 6.7 inches long and 55 ring gauge. Beautifully handmade, the cigar combines the tobacco grown by Arturo Fuente in the Dominican Republic and aged for three to five years with a Connecticut Shade wrapper. The flavor that this combination creates is one that is rich, with a toasty smell, and notes of cashew and wood. The smoke is full and produces voluminous billows when smoked. A fantastic reward for a job well done, or just for contemplating the meaning of life on your back porch.
