The Rarest Cigars in the World

The rarest cigars in the world are often as exclusive as they are elusive. Check out our short list and see what you can find!

Scoring and smoking a “Holy Grail” or rare cigar almost feels criminal. The mystique behind these cigars is hard to deny.  I composed a short list below of the most elusive cigars in the world.

Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Millennium

In 2000 Padrón released the 1964 Anniversary Serie Millennium with only 1,000 humidors containing 100 cigars each created. Most of the limited edition humidors are in the hands of private collectors. For those seeking a comparable cigar, El Cigar offers Padrón 1964 with a Natural or Maduro wrapper.

Fuente Don Carlos Box-Pressed Belicoso

The late Carlos Fuente Sr. used to make a Belicoso which was uniquely box-pressed only half way. The cigars were exclusively made for his own enjoyment, but on occasions he'd give some away. The cigars were never released commercially. The blend was slightly altered to accommodate the unique shape and size (box-pressed only half way). This is not the same blend as Fuente Eye of the Shark, yet is a similar size. Arturo Fuente Añejo No. 77 or Shark is a limited edition only available around Father’s Day and Christmas and very hard to score. Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario is an excellent alternative.

La Palina Goldie Laguita Especial

The Goldie debuted in 2012, a limited edition release offered in a different vitola each year. The first five were all rolled by one person, Maria Sierra, a former roller at the famed El Laguita factory in Havana. She finished her career at El Titan de Bronze in Miami in 2017. Goldie Laguita Especial Lancero (7 x 40) was the third release in the series, limited to 2,500 boxes of 10 cigars. As an alternative, La Palina offers the Goldie Dalia 2016 which is available at El Cigar Shop.

Dinner of the Century Cohibas

In 1995, Paris, publisher Marvin Shanken and Cigar Aficionado hosted an exclusive dinner party. The first of the evening's special cigars was a diplomatic Trinidad manufactured exclusively for Fidel Castro to present as gifts. A Cohiba Pyramid, and a Cohiba "A," were presented to guests and were made exclusively for the dinner by Cubatabaco. The cigars have never been sold commercially. At the end of the evening, a charity auction was held. The final lot to be auctioned was, called the “King's Ransom”, and consisted of six boxes, two each of the evening's cigars. After bidding the collection raised $200,000. Good luck finding these!

Trinidad Diplomatic Cigars

Trinidad cigars were "a brand only reserved for the Cuban Council of State's special gifts." Trinidad’s were presented to guests of Cigar Aficionado's Dinner of the Century as well. These Trinidad’s are so rare they've transcended the world of cigars. Unlike the Diplomatic Trinidad, which gets its name from a Cuban city whose main industry is tobacco, the Trinidad Fundadores, with a signature pigtail cap, was released to the public 1998.

Fuente Fuente Opus X

The Fuente Fuente Opus X is one of the most elusive cigars. Since its release, Opus X has been perhaps the most sought after cigar in the world.  Despite the hoopla made about how hard-to-find Opus X cigars are, Fuente releases around 750,000 per year. While it is not the easiest cigar to find, it is, in fact, readily available if you know when and where to look. Still, for the vast majority of people who smoke a cigar, Opus is about as rare as it gets. This Dominican Puro is one of the favorite brands of counterfeiters. Fuente Fuente Opus X is regarded as the gold standard by which all cigars are measured.

We here at El Cigar Shop strive to find rare and unusual cigars whenever and wherever we possibly can. Keep your eye on us, for you never know what we may turn up! Cheers!
