Rocky Patel introduced his signature Sun Grown brand over more than 10 years ago. An updated version was released in 2016, this time with a dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. Sun Grown Maduro is handcrafted at Patel’s Tavicusa factory in Estelí, Nicaragua instead of where the original is produced, which is still made in Honduras. Cigar Aficionado named the Sun Grown Maduro # 2 Cigar of the Year in 2016 and gave it an incredible 95 rating. I have to agree with the guys at Cigar Aficionado, the Sun Grown Maduro will definitely get some space in my humidor. In my opinion, the price point, the robustness of flavor, and the superb construction make this smoke a perfect addition to any humidor.

The original Sun Grown was dark to begin with, but the Maduro is stronger and more complex. The bold blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos is complimented by the Connecticut broadleaf wrapper creating medium to full flavors of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, earth and cashew with a zest of citrus. The Maduro wrapper ensures that right amount of sweetness on the palate.

Sun Grown Maduro Robusto takes approximately 40-50 minutes to smoke and is an excellent choice for an after dinner cigar. The chocolatey, earthy and nutty notes would go very well with an Islay Scotch, such as Lagavulin 16, or for the sweeter palate, a snifter of Grand Marnier.

Or, go back in time and mix up a Rusty Nail. Here ya go:

In a mixing glass with ice, combine 1 ounce of Drambuie with 2 ounces of Scotch. Dash in some Angostura bitters. Stir until well-chilled, and then strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon peel, twisting it over the drink before you serve to release its citrus oils.
