Tabacos Baez Serie SF is a short-filler cigar also known as a "Cuban-Sandwich". It is the first of its kind by My Father Cigars. Don’t let the term “short-filler” deter you from trying these lovely and inexpensive cigars.
The medium-bodied blend of high quality Nicaraguan short-filler and binder is finished with a velvety brown Habano-Nicaraguan wrapper. The surprising combination has notes of cocoa, creamy coffee, earth and spice. It is a very tasty "Cuban Sandwich", indeed. This reminded me of my quest of a different type of sandwich.....
Continuing my search for the best Cuban sandwich, I stumbled upon Las Olas Café in Miami Beach. I started with a Café Leche and an Arepa de Choclo which were sweet corn patties with queso cheese. Next the Cubano. The Cubano is not a very complex sandwich. Consisting of roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard and pickles on Cuban bread, it almost sounds mundane. But the two most important aspects of the sandwich are the mojo marinade for the pork, and the highest quality Cuban bread which can elevate this sandwich to a new level. A good pressing, as well, assures a melding of all the flavors. My sandwich came with a side of mariquitas, or plantain chips. The Cubano looked well-pressed, with light grill marks, and smelled delicious. I took my first bite of the simple Cubano and I was not disappointed. The smokiness of the ham and tang of melted Swiss nearly took my breath away. Los Olas Café has a winner. Was it the best? I’m not sure. I still had other Miami restaurants to visit. Now, time for a smoke.
