 The original Flor de las Antillas debuted in 2012 and was voted Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado magazine. Flor De las Antillas Maduro is similar in style as the original with a few extra additions. According to Vice President of sales at My Father Cigars, Jose Ortega, “We had to tweak [the cigar] in order to get the blend stronger than the regular Flor de las Antillas and in order to get the right balance with the Maduro wrapper." In the December 2017 issue of Cigar Aficionado the Flor de las Antillas Maduro received an epic 92. My Father has created a wonderful addition to their already impressive lineup of award winning cigars.

The Maduro contains a Nicaraguan double binder and fillers with a slightly different blend to balance the beautiful dark, Ecuadoran Habano Oscuro wrapper. The Flor de las Antillas Maduro is a box-pressed cigar made in Estelí, Nicaragua and the sun-grown wrapper is harvested from the Garcia family’s farm "Las Maria". Once you light up, you'll experience delicious notes of coffee, cream, oak and dried fruit.

To pair the Flor de las Antillas Maduro I considered a wine with dominant dark fruit flavors. Pinot Noir often has cherry flavors and Cabernet Sauvignon often tastes like black currants. Cabernet Sauvignon can also have a wide range of fruit flavors from raspberry, in cooler climates like Washington State, to blackberry, from warmer climates such as California. I opted for a Cabernet Sauvignon with flavors of black pepper with big tannins and tobacco notes to pair with my Maduro. The 2013 Trefethen Cabernet from Napa Valley is extensive and juicy on the palate. The quality reflects the cooler California climate. It imparts Napa's robust ripeness in its depth of cocoa, blackberry and black pepper. A pre-cigar meal of filet mignon with a red wine mushroom sauce was a great primer!
