Save for the color of the wrapper, the Ashton Aged Maduro line looks very much like the Ashton Classic line. The band is the same, with a simple declaration of ‘Ashton: Imported, Made By Hand’ on a white background. The box is almost precisely the same as the other Ashton Classic boxes, as well. But this cigar is no Ashton Classic when it comes to flavor or the content of the cigar.
Handmade in the Dominican Republic by Arturo Fuente, the Ashton Aged Maduro combines the business acumen of Robert Levin with the eye for detail and quality tobacco of Carlos Fuente Sr., who helped develop the line into what it is today. The wrapper is a sweet Maduro wrapper, rather than the Connecticut Shade of the Classic line, which helps to encourage the natural fermentation of the Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco. The cigar’s tobacco is aged precisely and consistently, delivering a cigar that will taste the same as the first one you smoked out of the box or the last one you smoked out of the shop.
The flavor of the cigar is greatly enhanced by the Maduro wrapper, but the aged Dominican tobacco plays its part as well. A medium-bodied cigar, one cannot help but think of the flavor of dark, pure chocolate and fine coffee while enjoying this cigar, which imparts a sweet and mellow sensation throughout. Perhaps it is because of these flavors that the cigar is such a wonderful companion to anyone who is looking for the best cigar to pair with their dessert or after-dinner coffee, one that compliments the sweetness with a mellow sweetness of its own. The No. 50 is the Churchill offering, with a length of 7 inches and a 48 ring gauge, and a flavor that could go well with chocolate cake or an Irish coffee.
