When Punch began operating in Cuba nearly two centuries ago, they were doing so with their eyes on a market. At the time, they weren’t much interested in the American market, because we were growing our own tobacco at the time in the kinds of quantities that even Cuba just couldn’t keep up with. However, the founder of Punch felt that there was a market that was being completely ignored; the European market, or, to be specific, the English market.
So he founded his own cigar company, and he began to market cigars towards the Brits, and was making money hand over fist. Fast forward a century and change, and the Cuban revolution happens. Suddenly, Punch is seized by the national government of Cuba, and Americans can no longer get them, thanks to the Embargo.
But the owner of Punch decides to reform the company outside of the country, and in 1969 opens a facility in Honduras where he can make cigars without the crushing rule of the Communist overlords. They begin to revitalize the name, making the cigars that made them famous, and doing so with Cuban-seed tobaccos that they took when they fled Cuba.
The Punch London Club EMS is a cigar that was an ‘English Market Selection’ vitola, designed for the consumption of the English. This basically means it is their premium crop, and they are making them available in the US. They’re great cigars, medium in body, and if you’re looking for a good cigar, or if you are just looking to feel a bit more like an anglophile, this cigar will be fantastic.
