Released in 2021, one of the newer ventures for the CAO brand is the Arcana Series and its first release, the Mortal Coil. This cigar is immediately unique because of its' use of andullo tobacco in the filler. Andullo tobacco uses a fermentation technique that is found primarily in the Dominican Republic. While most tobacco leaves are placed into large piles for the process, andullo tobacco is wrapped with palm tree pods into long rolls called yaguas. The pods are bound tightly with rope and rooted into the ground, which results in a densely packed log of tobacco that is known for delivering a concentrated and often sweet flavor.
These "logs" are then combined with a filler blend of Honduran tobacco from the Jamastran Valley, Nicaraguan tobacco from Estelí, and some Dominican Piloto Cubano. This incredibly complex blend is all tied together by a Connecticut shade binder and a dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper with the result being a medium-full bodied experience filled with notes of earth, cocoa, creaminess, and black pepper. This cigar finishes smooth and sweet and will immediately give you an extreme appreciation of the old-world fermentation ways. A limited release, so grab them while you can!
