- Tatascan is a Honduran puro made by cigar master Christian Eiroa’s father Julio. Manufactured by his independent company JRE Tobacco, Tatascan translates to “Head Boss”. This is a mild smoke with lots of flavor represented by various notes of graham cracker, pepper, caramel, and subtle hints of citrus in the last third. Very well constructed and affordably priced. JRE Tobacco is a company that has just begun to really grow, starting with their purchase of land for growing their own tobacco in Honduras. Before that, they were, for many years, a boutique cigar shop, one that was a bit small but that made amazing cigars nonetheless.
They have a story ta anyone familiar with cigar brands will have heard before. They were operating in Cuba, making cigars, making a nice profit, having a great time. Then came the communists, and the whole world changed for them. Suddenly, Cuba wasn’t a safe place, and they fled to the Americas, and later moved down to Honduras so that they could resume plying their trade.
There, they began to make amazing cigars with the Cuban Corojo seed that they had brought with them when they escaped. The cigars that they were making were flavorful, amazing, and hard to find. Even now as they’re growing, it is still hard to find many brands form JRE, including Tatascan, in most shops, so if you find it at your favorite humidor or while perusing your favorite online cigar shop, be sure to give them a try.
The Connecticut Shade Gran Toro from Tatascan is a good one. It begins with a Connecticut Shade wrapper grown in Honduras, and is filled with Habano and Corojo filler, bound with Corojo tobacco, and rolled expertly, leaving you with a cigar that is tasteful and creamy, with hints of fruit. Something that you will be happy you tried, and a cigar that you are going to want to try again and again.
