The Nicaragua Oscuro Robusto is one of two cigars La Palina makes at the A.J. Fernandez Cigar factory in  Estelí, Nicaragua. This collaboration between AJ Fernandez and Bill Paley has created a rich and spicy, high quality cigar.

The La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro Robusto is a blend of Ecuadorian Oscuro wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler creating a spicy and rich smoking experience. The chocolate colored Oscuro has an oily feel with rich aromas of earth, wood, and ripe fruit. A slight note of cedar is present at the foot of the Nicaraguan Oscuro.  The cool draw is excellent and tastes of coffee, more cedar and earth. This cigar would work well after a meal of Indio Viejo, a traditional Nicaraguan dish.

The name Indio Viejo literary means “old Indian” in Spanish and is a dish that dates back to pre-Columbian Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan dish is peppered with legend. As the story goes, a huddle of indigenous Nicaraguans had just prepared a feast of Indio Viejo when a group of Spanish conquistadors came by and asked them, “What smells so good?” The Nicaraguans, suspecting that the Spanish were trying to steal from them, said that an old Indian had just died and that they were serving him up with tortillas, sending the Spanish along their hungry way.

Nicaraguan cuisine may not be popular in the United States, but Indio Viejo is actually very delicious. The heavy stew uses a fatty piece of beef, such as a flank or skirt steak, simmered with onion, sweet chili, garlic, salt, tortillas, pig fat, hierbabuena (a minty herb)  and sour orange for several hours. Indio Viejo is a decadent plate of gluttony which must be indulged in to be appreciated.

Remember the tongue is for tasting, and storytelling. So, grab a La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro and relax and revel!
