La Gloria Cubana is not a new cigar maker, but rather one that has been in business for well over a century. They began operation in the 1880s, working out of Cuba and making some of the more full-bodied cigars that were being made in Cuba at the time, an almost unusual standout in a land that seemed to favor the more mellow tobacco and cigars. Their cigars were well liked, and yet today you cannot easily find them in your local cigar shop’s humidor or via your favorite online cigar shop.
And that is because of Castro, in no small part. In the sixties, the Castro communists rolled through Cuba, and every cigar maker they found, they would either nationalize the brand if it was well known enough, or they would just destroy the factory and that would be the death of it. Luckily, La Gloria Cubana was nationalized, but you cannot get their cigars today.
You can, however, get the cigars of La Gloria Cubana that was formed outside of Cuba in the 90s. Great cigars, made by people who were already old hands at making amazing cigars, and this Serie R Esteli is one of them.
It is a Nica Puro, a cigar made entirely in Nicaragua, and it is a tasty one at that. It starts with the best Maduro wrapper that can be found in Jalapa or Esteli, and then into it is placed some of the best tobacco in Nicaragua, which has been lovingly aged for just a few years longer than usual. The result is a dark, earthy cigar, one that is full in flavor and that has hints of espresso, emitting voluminous plumes, and being, in general, a joy to smoke.
