Finding a good dark cigar is a real challenge. There are so many of them on the market that are not worth the effort, cigars that are little more than spice-bombs filled with poorly-aged tobacco that is in need of another year or two’s worth of aging. And many other brands don’t even make truly dark cigars. Sure, there are plenty that are more in that brown coloration, but there are few cigars made from tobacco with a deep, rich, oily brown color, almost black, that you will find out on the market.
That being the case, it’s a truly welcome sight when someone like Hoyo de Monterrey produces a nice and dark cigar. First, it’s great because there’s another dark cigar on the market, but it’s also great because this cigar is one that you will be able to find without much effort. Being able to go to your local humidor or your favorite online cigar shop and having a lot of options for dark cigars? That’s my dream.
So what makes this cigar worth smoking? Well, we begin with an Esteli Habano Shade wrapper, which means you’re going to get a peppery, spicy flavor to the cigar, so it’s off to a good start for a darker smoke. The filler is Pennsylvanian, Nicaraguan Esteli, and Nicaraguan Ometepe, and the binder is Ecuadorian Sumatra. All this leads to the creation of a dark cigar with delicious tones, and a hint of bitterness. If you’re looking for a cigar to enjoy from the darker, spicier end of the spectrum, this is the cigar for you!
