A good cigar band tells a story about what it is that you can expect from the cigar, and it does it not just with words, but with the coloration, the picture, and the logo. The most important part of the logo on the Ashton VSG Belicoso #1, however, are three simple words, which make up the acronym VSG: Virgin Sun Grown.
As with so many of the best Ashton cigars on the market, the VSG Belicoso #1 is made at the Arturo Fuente factory in the Dominican Republic. It is made with the best binder and filler tobacco that can be found by the Arturo Fuente family. This often means that the tobacco is mostly from the Dominican Republic, but the Fuente family will source the tobacco from wherever they feel that they need to in order to get the right filler and the right flavor profile for the Ashton VSG line. The real prize, however, is the Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper that contains all that tobacco in a leaf with a little bit of oiliness to it. This has all combined to create a Belicoso cigar that is well-sought after by those who know about cigars, and the fact that these cigars are made in a limited quantity likely doesn’t help with their availability.
This cigar has a fantastic flavor to it, providing a peaty and peppery smoke that is full-bodied and full-flavored. The cigar is wonderful, and if you ever get hold of a few, you will find that they pair quite well with scotch, but that they stand up just fine on their own as well.
